MSO Orchestra Unplugged: The Complete History of Music: Abridged
February 04, 2020
Conductor Robert Moody took the audience on a musical journey through the history of music and it was amazing!

Robert Moody served as the conductor and host of The Complete History of Music: Abridged!  In the quiet elegance of the Halloran Centre guest were first welcomed by Ron Jewell, the VP of Operations.  Ron shared some of the exciting events coming up and got the evening kicked off for the sold-out crowd! What happened next took everyone by surprise as a group of Monks entered the hall doing a chant.  They took the stage and to everyone's delight, conductor Robert Moody was one of the Monks.

What followed was an evening of education and beautiful music.  From Gabrielli to Zappa.  This was music at it's best and Robert Moody shining as the perfect host.  Here is a look at the musical journey that was The Complete History of Music: Abridged!

The Musical Journey

  • Gabrielli Canzon septimi toni No. 2
  • Bach Orch. Suite No. 3, Overture in D Major
  • Hpschd, strings “Vite”
  • Haydn “Straight Opening.....” (no. 21) from Creation
  • Mozart Eine kleine Nachtmusik
  • Beethoven Symphony No. 9

Then following the intermission

  • Puccini “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi
  • Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings
  • Dvorak Symphony No. 9
  • Joplin/Hermann The Entertainer
  • Stravinsky “Napolitana” from Suite for Small Orch. No. 1
  • Schönberg Three Pieces for Chamber Orchestra
  • Cage 4:33
  • Bernstein “Times Square: 1944” from On the Town
  • Zappa G-Spot Tornado
  • Wendel The Flintstones Meet the Jetsons

Because I am a big kid at heart, the concluding number of the evening was my favorite, conductor Robert Moody ended the night with Wendel's The Flintstones Meet the Jetsons and it was truly amazing.  But the Memphis Symphony Orchestra was not the only shining star of the evening.  This concert event was a showcase of the Halloran Centre at the Orpheum Theatre.  From the moment I walked inside I felt like I was at a major red-carpet event.  The service to the attention to details around the centre, this place is amazing.  If you haven't attended an event at the centre, you are truly missing out.

Awesome small venue next to the Orpheum. Not a bad seat in the house.

Comfortable, warm, and intimate theater where the entertainers appear to be in the next seat. Throw in the amazing acoustics, and before you can say Jack Frost, you are transported into Never Never Land smack in the middle of downtown Memphis, so enthralled by the magic that time itself disappears into the evening air.
